Finding Joy on YouTube As a YouTuber, no doubt you’ve felt it. That annoying urge to just give it all up, retire early, and live out the rest of your life in a log cabin far away from everything. Why is it that we feel this way? The answer is actually quite simple, and somewhat selfish. Money and popularity; the two larger reasons why people start YouTube in the first place, and usually the main reasons they quit. Today, I’m here to help encourage three different YouTubers. Those that are just starting their YouTube adventure, those that have been creating on YouTube with (what feels […]

THX 4 THE FOLLOW: OUR TEAM’S FAVE HANDLES PART 2 We’re back for round 2 and this week it’s all about Instagram. McBeard co-founder and leader, Alec McNayr, lets us in on his insta habits (spoiler alert: he’s a cool dad) and V.P. of Accounts, Jenn Fisher, shares how she can find magic, even in the mundane follows. Can we get a double tap? Alec McNayr –  Founder and Leader of McBeard Preferred Platform: I love Instagram for personal posting (read: easiest way to see photos of my kids) and Twitter for tracking up-to-the-minute news and of course, comedy jokes. I also love Medium for the long reads… so much […]

THE 365: WEEK OF 4/24/17 Happy anniversary! Scroll down to see what these folks have learned since starting. Hannah Montplaisir, Senior Account Manager: 1 – Be a problem-solver. Don’t just call out a problem, be a part of the solution. 2 – Push the limits. Collaboration brings creativity, and the best ideas come to life when we challenge each other to think bigger and try something new. 3 – Rock the look. Hoodies, denim & a good pair of running shoes will never go out of style. (Yes, even all together). Melissa Diaz, Account Coordinator: 1 – Always take the time to make your coworkers […]

Production Tips: Finding the right camera In this series we’ve discussed the importance of lighting, chatted about the various tools available to enhance your audio recording and now, without further ado – it’s time to finish the holy trinity and discuss the camera. Often you’ll see comments on videos like “What camera did you use?” or “What was this shot on?” and for people like Casey Neistat, FunForLouis, Ben Brown and others, it’s become common practice to list their gear in their video’s description to help fend off the rabid camera-junkies. It goes without saying, having a camera is pretty crucial to the video making process. […]

YouTube only monetizing channels with over 10k views You’ve probably heard by now, but YouTube announced last week that it is tightening up its requirements to be a part of their Partner Program. Over five years ago, YouTube opened the floodgates for more creators to participate in the program and start monetizing. This was huge, and created opportunities for all creators. Unfortunately, it also opened up opportunities for people to start abusing the system for their own financial gains. YouTube has spent those last five years fine-tuning this process, putting in place systems and processes to combat this abuse and assure that people’s content (and the money made […]

YES, I WORK IN SOCIAL Yes, I work in social. For those of us who do, the response we generally get from those who don’t, typically falls into one of the following: So like, PR? That’s cute I can’t believe that’s a job I hate millennials Ugh, you and every other girl on Bumble. If you’re anything like me, then, depending on your mood and competitive nature, you may proceed to explain how social is literally driving cultural change, movements, brand perceptions, and like, SALE$ . Real talk: you may want to think about how what we, social experts, do affects customer loyalty and influences […]

THX 4 THE FOLLOW: OUR TEAM’S FAVE HANDLES PART 1 We are all social, all the time. And that means our leaders are too. For the next six weeks, we will profile a few influential leaders each week to learn who they are following, liking, and RTing –– on and off the clock. Two of our Vice Presidents of Accounts, Darnell Brisco and Caitlin Robertson share their favorite platforms and handles for getting up to speed industry news, know-how, and snark. Darnell Brisco, @Dbrisco “I spend the most time on Instagram and Twitter. They complement each other well in my consumption habits. Curated visuals/micro-videos vs a steady stream of constant news.” […]

Don’t rely on YouTube to pay your bills It’s certainly been an interesting few weeks on YouTube, especially on the revenue front. We’ve heard from several creators – both in and out of the Fullscreen Creator Network, that CPMs have dropped heavily and revenue is following suit. Since it doesn’t affect everyone equally, and there are a whole slew of reasons that CPMs are dropping, we’re going to save that for another day. Today, we’re going to tackle on a harder hitting topic. Don’t expect to make money on YouTube. This statement gains more weight each and every year, and likely won’t slow up anytime soon. The fact of […]

Real Talk with Joanna & Haley Introducing Real Talk, a new series where we sit down with you the creator, get to know you, your creative process, how you got started, and also ask you to get real. We’re kicking off the series with a couple of our favorite creators: Joanna Spicer & Haley Blais. They both run amazing channels covering everything from beauty tutorials, sketch comedy, vlogs, music, and so much more. One of the most interesting things about them is their cross-continent collaboration. Haley lives in Canada, and Joanna here in LA, and yet they run a podcast together, and found a way to […]
